if you’ve got a bunch of teenagers in space w no access to media they are going to start making their own entertainment so i think that we need to discuss team voltron memes

  • “where’s [insert team member here]?” “i mean… *looks out window at the stars, shrugs* space, probably”
  • they keep a tally of every time lance gets rejected by someone and use it to shut him up when he’s getting annoying

While making that video I realize that Shiro most of the time acts like a literal dad (or at least an older brother) who’s always scolding (Lance, Hunk, and sometimes Keith when he’s in an argument with Lance lol….and I must admit Slav in S2…) or mentoring/supporting/comforting children (mainly Keith and Pidge).

If you live in the US, you should not be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea in a “we’re all going to die” way. DPRK has one rocket that can reach the continental US, it’s barely gotten functional, and they have no warheads small enough to be carried by that rocket. They can theoretically hit Hawaii and Alaska, but Hawaii is a small, long-range target and Alaska has very low population density, so attacks there would likely be ineffective.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea. It’s to say that you should stop being so fucking self-centered about it.

We’re not going to die. If we nuke North Korea, we’ll wipe out thousands of noncombatants, just like we did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even in an “ideal” outcome for that first strike, where Kim goes down immediately, his military apparatus will retaliate — against South Korea and probably Japan. This hypothetical nuclear exchange will kill millions of civilians who, surprise surprise, live far away and look sort of not-European. Then we’ll spend the rest of our long, non-incinerated lives bickering with each other over whether it was cool of us to start that fight.

If you want to speak out against Trump’s nuclear bullshittery, don’t bleat “we’re all going to die.” Yell “no atrocities in our name.”

I am only two episodes in but am already Very Worried about Shiro

At the time the show starts, Shiro has been missing for a year. Two episodes in, we don’t know a lot about what happened, but I’ll list what we do know:

1. Shiro was head of a mission. The people he was responsible for were captured by genocidal and war mongering aliens.

2. He was also captured by genocidal and war mongering aliens, who are willing to assault unarmed and restrained prisoners.

3. Shiro does not remember anything that happened to him over the course of that year.

4. At some point, Shiro lost his arm. He does not remember losing his arm.

5. Shiro has an alien prosthetic where his arm used to be. Shiro does not remember receiving the prosthetic. He does not know what the prosthetic can do. The prosthetic has technological capabilities that are periodically activated without his conscious thought or consent.

6. The first clear memory Shiro seems to have in a year is being back on Earth(?), being strapped to a gurney and talked over, and forcibly drugged while pleading to the scientists to listen to him. He visibly reacts when they mention the prosthetic, implying that’s the first time he’s realized his arm is gone.

7. Shiro is experiencing flashbacks in combat situations. They are not pleasant flashbacks. He does not seem to yet understand what is causing them or how to process them. His team does not understand what is going on when he experiences them. 

8. Again, I’m only two episodes in but it looks like out of the group Shiro is the one who is always wearing his uniform. Also, when we see the characters in their downtime Shiro is the one who is training and not sleeping or relaxing.

Shiro experienced something incredibly, viscerally traumatic. He lost his bodily autonomy, he lost his agency, and people who he was responsible for got hurt. When he finally got away from the people who were hurting him, the first humans he encountered drugged and restrained him, and then he was immediately thrust back into a combat situation that is actively triggering him. His flashbacks are only going to get worse, and neither he nor his teammates seem to realize that’s imminent.

Under absolutely no circumstances should Shiro be in active combat right now. He should definitely not be leading the team. This has nothing to do with him as a person and everything to do with trauma. Until Shiro has a chance to adequately process his trauma and remember what happened during that year, every time he goes into combat he’s putting his life and the life of his team at risk, because combat is triggering his flashbacks. 

I am Very Worried about Shiro.

Apparently, I am the only one brave enough to spread The Truth. I cannot believe I haven’t seen anyone ever talk about how five kids going to space school to go to actual space and be space explorers are 100% absolute nerds for iconic space pop culture?? Rude. I am here to fix that with a too long text post about Paladins loving Star Trek because I do too.

Shiro: Aight, my man. He really really admires Picard all right. Level headed mostly (but has a temper!) and stands up for his crew and tries his goddamn best and is respectable but also a badass who is captured by aliens and tortured. But also is a fan of Enterprise. (Matt lowkey is insulted becuase “They changed the Captain canon! Rude!!”)He has a fondness for TOS (as we all must) but for him? Next Gen is where it’s at. He may have been introduced to it by Matt because of course he was. (Matt’s preferred is Deep space Nine tho) One time he made a Borg joke with his Galra tech arm and Hunk nearly had a heart attack.

Lance: Everyone thinks that obviously Lance’s fave is Kirk because bi flirt out in space with literally any alien who is semi humanoid and hot? Lance’s thing! But no. oh man oh nO. He adores Captain Janeway. LIke, will fight for her and defend her honour. Don’t diss Voyager in front of Lance because you are just asking for a lecture about missed potential. He loves every character on that show please don’t get him started. (He cries about Seven?Tuvok is so cool?) Maybe it’s nostalgia, but he doesn’t care. His family would watch Star Trek together and commentate. (do you really think Lance isn’t the guy to talk through things making snarky comments?) Also? Tom Paris??? his idol. He literally wanted to BE Tom when he was a kid. Hot shot pilot in space? (warP TEN) Hell yeah. (He doesn’t tell anyone that a fictional pilot on a tv show that gets less respect than its counterparts was his inspo for being a space pilot. He lets everyone think it was Shiro, who was also inspo, but not the first)

Hunk: In a “sure buddy, choose the movies we marathon this weekend” gesture for Lance, Hunk has seen all Star Trek movies ever made, (including the two part Voyager finale because “It’s as good as, Hunk. we deserve a Voyager movie”) thus inducting him into being a fan. His fav is The Voyage Home. (“oh my gosh, he can talk to whales!” “he sure can, he’s so cool.”) Please do not ever mention the Borg ever because Hunk does not need to think about a virus species of tech enhanced people and aliens taking over the universe. He really enjoys Next Gen, though, and loves Geordi. (also B’Elanna. and Scottie. ok literally any Engineer and they are Hunk’s fave). DS9 is his all time fave though.

Pidge: Frick, man. Matt is her big bro? She’s been able to quote Rath of Kahn since she before she could walk. (Do not tell her mother that her first word was KAAAAAHN when Matt took something away from her.) She, like Lance, grew up with family Trek time. The Original Series is her favourite, obviously, with how much she watched it. (It is her dad’s ok, and no matter what you tell me she’s daddy’s little girl.) Though she has soft spots the size of a warp core for both Data and the Doctor because robots?? And holograms?? FeELING????? DISCOVERING THEIR HUMANITY AND HELPING THEIR FRIENDS KNOW THEIR OWN. YES. She is ready to drag Lance and Voyager SO HARD (even though it isn’t that bad)

Keith: brah. boi. He’s only seen the 2009 reboot and, though the rest of the team knows not to mock new fans,  what the quiznak Keith? (Lance is morrally offended and demands team bonding  binge watching) He thought it was fine?? Not worth the hype though, and take offence to all the digital screens onboard the Enterprise because “those would crack so easily why do you think NASA hardly changed cockpit designs?? because it’s sturdy and woRKS.” “oh man then wait ‘till you get a load of the original series, my man.” Once he actually watches the series TOS is his fave. Classic, and sturdy spaceship. He doesn’t care if it’s kind of hokey, it’s fun. (Though he does sometimes yell “that doesn’t make seNSE!”)

(Unfortunately, Discovery hasn’t aired yet but maybe I’ll update this when it does?) I can’t fit everyone in ST in this but anyway I love space and Star Trek and Voltron.

im just a huge sucker for charismatic villains becoming sort of pseudo good guys and hanging out with the main characters just because a bigger, more serious threat emerges and i dont think it happens enough tbh. especially when they’re still kind of a dick, i just think its a fun trope

seriously. everybody wins. you will get fans who come to visit the region again, but you give them the opportunity to explore a new story and meet new characters. heck, you can even meet returning characters a couple of years into the future. they already did this with bw2!!! i want to meet lillie while she is travelling in kanto! i want to see what happened to silver!!! i want to know if hau ever became island kahuna! I WANT TO SEE HOW ARCHIE, MAXIE, GUZMA, N, ETC (aka the “redeemable” villains) ARE DOING heck, even meeting again some of the background characters like gym leaders, after some years have passed, and maybe they are adults or old people now, or even have families (imagine if, after byron retires, roark’s child becomes a new gym leader and continues the family tradition).

or we can go even further and think about the potential of prequels as well. i would lose my shit if you get to play a game in sinnoh and cyrus, as a child, is your rival while cynthia is your best friend. why not even tie in with the anime? giovanni’s mother is supposed to be the founder of team rocket DONT YOU WANNA FIGHT A SCARY MOBSTER LADY???? i want to meet professor juniper when she was an assistant and getting her degree!!!! i want to visit hoenn when it was less developed and technologically advanced!!!! BINCH!!!
